Tinnitus is a sound produced inside the body, not from an outside source.

Tinnitus is one of the symptoms of Long Covid that is affecting millions of people. Even if you didn’t have severe symptoms of Covid, you could still have new or different symptoms, months or years after the infection. 

Tinnitus is usually described as a ringing in the ears. 

It can sound like whining, roaring, whooshing, clicking, hissing, buzzing – a variety of different sounds, tones, and volumes. It can become louder or softer depending on the time of day or your energy level. 

Living with tinnitus can mean poor sleep, inability to concentrate, and trouble thinking – and if it’s loud or doesn’t go away, it can affect or even ruin your quality of life.

Long COVID is defined by the CDC as signs, symptoms, and conditions that continue or develop after initial COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2 infection. The signs, symptoms, and conditions are present four weeks or more after the initial phase of infection; may be multisystemic; and may present with a relapsing–remitting pattern and progression or worsening over time, with the possibility of severe and life-threatening events even months or years after infection. Long COVID is not one condition. It represents many potentially overlapping entities, likely with different biological causes and different sets of risk factors and outcomes.

There may be treatments that can help, but there is currently no cure for Long Covid-induced tinnitus. If you’re suffering, talk to your primary care physician about what you’re going through. Living with tinnitus is painful and life shouldn’t have to be this way.
